How to Self-Publish That Great Novel Without Going Nuts!
by Delores Thornton
begins as follows:
Let's Get Started
So you've written what you think is the next great novel. You've penned the Greatest Story Never Told. What now? You submit, then wait, then throw the rejections slips in the trash. Then submit, then wait....
You might consider self-publishing--but bear in mind that this road is not for everyone. There are a million details that require your attention if you're to succeed in the book industry. One of the most invaluable tools I've encountered is, "The Self-Publishing Manual" by Dan Poynter, which will guide you through the process of writing, marketing, pricing, and even selling your book. There are chapters on invoices, charge-back slips from wholesalers, and discounts. If you read the material carefully, then apply yourself, you're half-way there.
I'm often asked what's the hardest thing I've done so far in promoting my novels. I have to say that getting radio and television interviews was difficult, initially. Like a lot of new authors, I worked a full-time job, and it wasn't easy trying to contact the media in the evenings. When I was able to talk with them, it was a positive experience, however. Be prepared, and please be professional! Don't and ask if someone likes your material. Instead, inquire as to whether or not it's been received. Normally, if it has, and the interviewer is interested, they'll let you know.
The print media has been kinder to me--and I feel very confident when I approach columnists and reviewers. I send my all important review kit--then do a follow-up phone call in two weeks. Newspapers usually require more of a lead in time than other forms of media, but the print reviews have a more lasting effect than other forms of publicity. You can do more with the news clips, than tapes or CDs--and they're easier to store. They also have the possibility of reaching more people.
Once you've been in the papers, and on the radio--it's time to hit the road. Touring can be fun, or it can be your worse nightmare. There are so many things to consider. Should I turn down engagements? What should I charge for speaking engagements? (And believe me, you will be asked what your fee is) What is honorarium, and when is it customary?
